ORV Field Damage Survey
February 19, 2005

Mark Heuston
Carol Metzger

Summary:

In response to suspected ORV field damage and likely trespass, Carol Metzger and I did ground truthing between Shadow Mountain Road & Wilson Road (N - S) and Amboy Road and Indian Trail. (E - W) Carol and I observed significant ORV damage in a local wash complex, and surveyed the portion of the wash between Barbara Lane and Wilson Road with GPS coordinates and photos. Ground evidence indicates the passage of a large number of ORVs including sand rails. WEMO Map # 80 clearly indicates that the ORV passage trespassed a number of private properties and numerous BLM land blocks not open to vehicular access.

It is probable that the same wash complex is impacted between Barbara Lane and the intersection of Amboy Road and Meriwether Road, but for safety reasons that ground survey will be postponed until post - holiday when the ORV staging locations clear out. The wash segment addressed in today's survey is further described as follows: Sections 11, 12, 7, & 8 TWP 1N Range 10E SBB&M.

Field Notes:

Weather: Light rain at survey start, then cloudy and some sun.

First discovery of off road wash damage on Barbara Lane one mile North of the intersection of Barbara Lane X Amboy Road. Road berm is breached in numerous locations by ORV passage.

Barbara Lane:

GPS Waypoint # 18: Elevation 1371 feet, N34 deg 10' 50.9", West 115deg 52' 27.4"

Photo point # 1: View W along wash to show detail of wash & road berm damage.

Photo point # 2: View E along wash to show detail of wash & road berm damage.

Photo point #3: ORV damage in wash @ 100 yards W of waypoint.

Photo point #4: View NNW, ORV damage in wash @ 100 yards W of waypoint.

Wilson Road:

Photo point #5: 200 feet S of intersect. of Garden X Wilson Road, View to SE.

Photopoint # 6: Close up detail of sand rail tracks at above location.

Photopoint # 7: Close up detail of more tracks at same location.

West bound ORV tracks terminate at Wilson Road, evidence on ground that ORV's turned around and returned to the E via the same wash. ORV tracks are fresh; appear to have been made within the last 24 hours.
