BLM Releases WEMO Plan
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) released their long-awaited West Mojave Plan (WEMO) which increases the number of routes that can be used by off-road-vehicles and places those routes in a way that invites trespass on private lands and public lands including Wilderness Areas, Areas of Critical Environmental Concern (ACECs) and National Parks.
The new plan threatens the desert tortoise, Mojave ground squirrel and over 100 other sensitive plant and animal species. We need for Morongo Basin residents to get a copy of the plan and research their area maps (or come to our meetings) and document how they will be affected by the newly designated routes and communicate with us so we can include your information as we lodge a formal protest.
COW has participated with the Alliance for Responsible Recreation to submit the protest.
The response can be reviewed here. This is a PDF file and requires Adobe Reader to view it.
Obtain WEMO plans by calling (951) 697-5200 and request that they mail you the three volumes, or go to the BLM office at 22835 Calle San Juan De Los Lagos, Moreno Valley, California 92553. Copies are also to be placed in local libraries and the plan can be found on the web at www.ca.blm.gov.
See our WEMO page which contains surveys that COW members have made as well as Morongo Basin maps showing the proposed routes.
